My name is Amber Larson. I am taking this class because I’m working on a Post-Bacc teaching certification and MEd in Secondary Education. I’m currently living in Fairbanks, AK, but I was born and grew up in the Pacific Northwest. I spent 12 years in the Air Force, five of which were as a technical training instructor. Becoming an instructor gave me a love of teaching, and when I separated from the military I decided to pursue that. I currently hold a BS in Geology, and have worked towards a MS in Geology. During both degree programs I was a teaching assistant, culminating in about 10 years of experience teaching adults.
I have a 13 (almost 14) year old son who goes to school where I work (Tanana Middle School). He is the light of my life, and amazingly still “claims” me in front of his friends (How did I get that lucky?). I’m also engaged to a wonderful man who grew up here in Fairbanks, and we are planning to get married this coming July on our 4 year anniversary. My hobbies are reading, painting, drawing, Aurora photography, and singing.
I am eager to have my own class, and am excited to participate in my college classes. I envision my education program providing me with experience and insight into how to effectively manage a classroom and teach my students. I hope that through the course of my degree program I can use my previous experience teaching adults and learn to adapt it for use in the secondary classroom.
